PROFILE FOR UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES

University College of Health Sciences (UNICOHS) is a privately owned University College in Zambia.  UNICOHS was started in 2013 and was known as the Zambian School of Community Health Sciences, offering one programme, the ‘Certified Assistant Nursing programme.’  A second programme, ‘Environmental Health Technician programme’ at diploma level was added in 2014.  The secondary education programme was added in 2015.

The name of the college changed to the ‘University College of Health Sciences’ in 2016.  UNICOHS was at the time situated in Makeni at former Makeni Winnie Hotel along Losangels Road at Plot No 5402/M Lusaka. The institution is currently situated in Barlastone.  UNICOHS is conscious of its position as a young institution but boasts of having a great vision and great ambition in providing holistic tertiary education to prospective students. The Institution intends to achieve this because of its agility, alertness and innovativeness to modern trends in education.

UNICOHS has taken advantage of the enabling environment of the Government of the Republic of Zambia and is supplementing Government effort in providing quality education to contribute to meeting the increasing demand for human power, especially in the health sector.

The UNICOHS operations are in conformity with Government policy framework, regulations and the created conducive and enabling environment.  To this effect, UNICOHS is accredited by HPCZ for both Environmental Health (EHT)and Clinical Medicine (CM) programmes.

Education is widely accepted by many educationists as a process of imparting knowledge, skills and values. UNICOHS, has therefore, aligned itself with this view by emphasizing education that trains the heart, head and hands. UNICOHS is committed to providing education to students that will emphasize students’ academic, physical and moral development. We desire to offer the best education to humanity based on Christian principles.

We believe that in defining our strategy clearly, our current partners will better identify our common priorities and support UNICOHS in achieving its strategy. In addition, academic institutions, businesses, the community, the Government and individuals will be able to find specific niches of common interest and support UNICOHS strategy.

In January, 2019, the University College of Health Sciences (UNICOHS) moved from the rented premises in Makeni to its plot in Barlastone Park. The College is on a Five (5) Acre piece of land in Barlastone Park area of Lusaka West. The piece of land is located about 13 Kilometers from the Lusaka Central Business Area. The Campus in Barlastone is already fully operational and the building programme is continuing. All this is in the quest to not only grow in terms of size but to be free to expand the services and maintain the quality of education provided.

UNICOHS has grown in leaps and bounds and from the initial 8 students enrolled in 2013 can now boast of having an enrollment of close to 450 students with the number projected to double by the end of year 2022. UNICOHS also employs 41 employees and has provided employment opportunities for Zambians. Since a family unit in Zambia averages 6 people, then it follows that our is contributing to the sustenance of 246 Zambians. Additionally UNICOHS provides business opportunities to businesses in Lusaka, especially those in the supply and service industry.

The College Board of Directors decided that the College must be one that operates as entrepreneurial College generating revenue outside of student school fees to finance most of the capital projects. School fees cover direct expenses that arise out of running the educational programmes directly. Therefore the University College is proactively taking strides towards looking for alternatives sources to finance capital projects which would as well help keep schools fees low and manageable for most Zambians.
